Custom Music

If you already have an .ogg file proceed to step 5 or 6. To start from scratch proceed to step 1.

Step 1

To keep the volume of the music at the same level you can use a free program called MP3Gain.

Goto http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/ and go to Downloads to get it.

  1. Start MP3Gain and drag a mp3 file from windows explorer into the white field in MP3Gain.
  2. Press the 'Track Analysis' button to see what the track volume is.
  3. Then set the 'Target "Normal" Volume'. I recommend putting it on 98.0 dB for Trackmania.
  4. Now press 'Track Gain' and the track volume will be changed to (around) 98 dB.

Step 2

First i will tell you how to make .ogg files. There are dozens of programs that can convert to .ogg. Here is just an example with a free program i use:

CD'n'GO is a free program that lets u rip music from CD to Ogg Vorbis (.ogg), thats the format we are looking for. However i checked the CD'n'GO site and its gone so i guess CD'n'GO is finito. But i still have the install file so here ya go:

http://downloads.otmb.org/tools/cdngo.v2.00.945.setup.exe (5 MB)

Install CD'n'GO and run it. Goto: View > Options > Compression. At 'Compress using this software' choose Ogg Vorbis. Then select target directory.

Insert a CD and press the 'CD Audio Ripper' button. Highlight the mucis track(s) u want and press the 'Extract' button to the right. A screen will appear where u can alter the Tag information. Press 'Accept'.

First a .wav will be made and then it will be converted to .ogg.

To keep file size small go to View > Options > Programs > VorbisDLL and change to mono and set the slidebar to Normal.

Step 3

If u don't have Ogg Vorbis codecs installed get them here:

- Ogg Vorbis ACM (this is to compress):

http://www.free-codecs.com/download_soft.php?d=1115&s=37 (125 kB) (right-click and save target as)

Uncompress the files from vorbis_ogg_acm.zip archive, right-click on the vorbisacm.inf file and select Install.

Info: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Vorbis_Ogg_ACM.htm

- Ogg Vorbis DirectShow Filter (This is for Windows Media Player or any other directshow application to play Ogg Vorbis):

http://www.free-codecs.com/download_soft.php?d=32&s=15 (797 kB) (right-click and save target as)

Install the .exe file.

Step 4

CD'n'GO only rips from CD and can't convert (.mp3) files on your computer to .ogg

To convert .mp3's use [Audacity ]

Step 5

Now we need to convert that .ogg file to .mux. This mux format is used by TrackMania. Im not sure if its better but since TM uses it why not use it too for geek's sake. But u can also just use .ogg and proceed to step 5.

TrackMania Sunrise has a build in converter so open the TrackMania Sunrise launcher and go to:

Help > Custom data > Convert music.

Select your .ogg file and open it. It will immideately be converted to .mux and will be placed in:

C:\Program Files\TrackMania Sunrise\GameData\Skins\ChallengeMusics.

Step 6

Place your .mux files or .ogg files in:

C:\Program Files\TrackMania Sunrise\GameData\Skins\ChallengeMusics.

(If you have converted to .mux with TMS' build in converter they are already in that folder.)

Now upload the .mux or .ogg files to your webspace and make a Locator File in the same folder as the .mux or .ogg files.

Start TrackMania Sunrise, go into Track Editor and go to Media Tracker. Then select Custom Music and select your song.

When you save your race track, the url in the .loc file will be saved in the trackfile (gbx). At least i think.

Note that when u use existing race tracks to add music to, u have to make sure to save the race tracks with another name (e.g. i changed the names by adding '_M' behind it (M for music Wink ) or else music won't play when hosting online.

Im not sure but i think the problem is that there also is a copy of the existing race track in peoples cache and TMS uses the old one instead of the new one with music.

Step 7

This guide was for adding music to a racetrack but it works the same for sounds, only u have to place them in:

C:\Program Files\TrackManiaSunrise\GameData\Skins\MediaTracker\Sounds

Start TrackMania Sunrise, go into Track Editor and go to Media Tracker. Select 'Add clip' and then 'Add track'. Choose 'New Track Type' as 'Sound' and 'Choose a sound'.

May not work!
