Environment Coast

Coast is the second environment for TrackMania Sunrise. It was shown in Germany in October, 2004.

Coast is environment featuring racing on formula-style blocks, old asphalt road blocks and offroad. It's probably most technical environment in TM Sunrise.

Car

The Coast car is most likely rear wheel driven and very low-powered, according to its top speed of under 300km/h. It also has very tricky handling and once it's in a 4-wheel slide, it either stops on its own or crashes. The Coast car also turns badly, which requires practice to do it well.

Speed : slow
Braking : powerful
Acceleration : somewhat good
Handling : very slippery
Reversal : rather rare

Driving

Coast is very technical to drive and it requires different skills than Island or Bay.

Driving on road

On road it's important to have "feel" on the surface and use brakes or throttle control to keep car away from skidding. If the car skids, there's usually more than 80% change of crashing, depending on situation. Only very skilled drivers get advantage from sliding.

Driving on GP

Driving on GP (Grand Prix, those racetrack blocks) is mostly like on road, but GP blocks allow more variations with turns, so there's needed to pay attention when racing.

Driving offroad

Offroad, car can go as fast as on the road, but it has less traction, which means worse handling. Offroad, it's very easy to slide, so braking and especially throttle control are very important.

Building

Building on coast takes lots of skill to do. Making challenging, smooth and fun tracks isn't very easy, because tracks easily turn into "all-time skidding" which isn't a good thing. Almost all coast tracks are divided into a few different styles.

Blocks added in eXtreme expansion

Coast had its additions with eXtreme too, along with Island and Bay. The most popular addition is the red booster, but it has less use on Coast than on Island. eXtreme also added some new stunt blocks and scenery. There are also roads going down-to-water, which are commonly used for technical sections. New sign blocks have been added also.

Popularity

Coast isn't as popular as Island, according to internet play, where island tracks are played much more than coast tracks. Apart from that, many professional drivers prefer Coast. Also, there's a number of coast lovers, from beginners to professionals. The main reason why coast isn't so popular is because it's slow and somewhat difficult to master. For example, Island is easier to learn and it's five times faster.

Gameplay

Coast is obviously the environment the most centred on simulation. Its puffing roadster requires somewhat perfect driving which doesn't allow much room for mistakes, and the narrow roads of Provence (where the scene would take place) don't help. The vehicle has a very low maximum speed (rarely more than 250 km/h) compared to the other cars and is inclined to slide easily on the two types of Coast roads, namely very usual and realistic roads accompanied by F1 track parts, which are more complicated to build. This environment, very often run down by beginners, is only appreciable after a certain adaptation and learning time in order to master as well as predict the car behaviour.
